Look to the Lighthouse - Look to Jesus
Navigating the Storms of Life
When you are facing challenges with mental health, you never really know what your day may look like. Some days may feel manageable, while others bring unexpected waves of anxiety, depression, or despair. You wake up hoping and praying for peace, longing for smooth sailing, but life often has a way of tossing us into turbulent waters.
Our lives resemble that of mariners at sea, rising and falling with the waves. They, too, hope and pray for calm waters, yet they know from experience that storms are inevitable. A ship at sea faces many challenges—shifting winds, crashing waves, and unpredictable weather. Some storms are brief, lasting only a few hours, while others rage on for days or even weeks. The greatest concern for any sailor is whether the ship will withstand the storm.
When a ship is caught in a tempest, visibility is poor, and navigation becomes difficult. The crew doesn’t always know what lies ahead, but they rely on their instruments, their training, and most importantly, the guiding light of the lighthouse. The lighthouse stands unwavering, piercing through the darkness, providing direction and hope.
Jesus is our lighthouse.
In the storms of life, when anxiety, depression, stress, or hopelessness try to pull you under, remember this: succumbing to the storm is not an option. Look to the lighthouse, look to Jesus. His Word is your navigation system, your anchor in troubled waters. He promises to guide you, to hold you steady, and to bring you through the storm.
"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee." Isaiah 43:2 KJV
The disciples once found themselves caught in a storm on the Sea of Galilee. The winds howled, the waves crashed, and fear gripped their hearts. But then, Jesus walked toward them on the water, saying, "Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid." Matthew 14:27 KJV Even in the storm, He was present.
Like the sailors using their navigation tools to find safety, we, too, must use our spiritual tools--prayer, scripture, worship, and faith—to find our way through life's storms. The storm may not always pass immediately, but with Jesus as your guide, you will not be lost.
"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" Psalm 27:1 KJV
No matter how fierce the storm, keep your eyes on the lighthouse. Keep your eyes on Jesus. He will lead you safely to shore.
