When God says He wants to cleanse us, I believe it is deeper than we actually comprehend. You see, our thoughts create emotions that affect our body, as well as impact our mind and spirit. Science clearly bears out that certain emotions get locked into our tissues. Unless these emotional toxins that are causing havoc in the body, mind and spirit are removed, or purged out of us, we cannot have "true" cleansing, and cannot be made whole. Toxic thoughts, toxic emotions, and toxic tissues contaminate.
I have discovered that any type of physical cleansing goes hand in hand with forgiveness. You cannot have the one without the other. When there is no forgiveness or an inability to forgive, there is a harboring of the fruits of bitterness, anger, grief, unkind words, etc. Not only is there a need for "us" to "extend" forgiveness to those who have wronged us in order for us to receive cleansing, but it is also important for us to "receive" or accept forgiveness from "others" in order for us to be thoroughly cleansed and made whole. When our minds are free and clear that we have done our part to be at peace with others, we will then receive the promise of that peace that passes all understanding. ("And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.") Ephesians four has a list of counsel that we would do well to observe. Ephesians 4:30 says "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31) Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32) And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." Ephesians 4:30-32. To receive "true" cleansing of the Holy Spirit, there is the necessity of putting away toxic emotions, thoughts, words, and actions that contaminate. Cleansing cannot be full and complete without forgiveness -- forgiveness brings a release from all of these emotions. If you have a release of physical toxins but no forgiveness, you still cannot be truly cleansed body, mind, and spirit, because the thoughts and emotions will re-contaminate the body. BLESSINGS ATTENDING FORGIVENESS "When we come to ask mercy and blessing from God we should have a spirit of love and forgiveness in our own hearts. How can we pray, "Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors," and yet indulge an unforgiving spirit? Matthew 6:12. If we expect our own prayers to be heard we must forgive others in the same manner and to the same extent as we hope to be forgiven. Unceasing prayer is the unbroken union of the soul with God, so that life from God flows into our life; and from our life, purity and holiness flow back to God."
