1. Spend Seasons of Communion with God
Enoch is a most wonderful example of one who spent time with God, and is an
encouragement to those who struggle to walk one day with God. The Bible says of him in
Gen. 5:21-24 "And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselahe: 22 And Enoch
walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and
daughters: 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: 24 And
Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him."
In order for Enoch to walk with God for 300 years he not only recognized the constant
presence of God in his life, but maintained an intimate relationship with God through prayer
and unceasing communion. This was the secret that empowered him to live a faithful life of
total harmony to the will of God.
Enoch did not live his life shut away from contact with the outside world, but just the
opposite. He was faithfully warning the people of his time (who through the Caninite line of
Lamech added murder to the vice of polygamy) of the coming judgments of God against
those who do wickedness. He is described by Jude in verses 14 & 15 this way, "And Enoch
also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten
thousands of his saints. 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are
ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of
all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him."
"In the midst of a life of active labor, Enoch steadfastly maintained his communion with God.
The greater and more pressing his labors, the more constant and earnest were his prayers. He
continued to exclude himself, at certain periods, from all society. After remaining for a time
among the people, laboring to benefit them by instruction and example, he would withdraw,
to spend a season in solitude,, hungering and thirsting for that divine knowledge which God
alone can impart. Communing thus with God, Enoch came more and more to reflect
the divine image. His face was radiant with a holy light, even the light that shineth in the
face of Jesus. As he came forth from these divine communings, even the ungodly beheld with
awe the impress of heaven upon his countenance." PP 86, 87
2. Receive and Claim the Promises of God
We need to believe, make use of, and claim the "promised blessings" of God. Many people
claim promises to receive wealth, material things which perish, or promises for selfish pursuits.
However the "promised blessings" are for the purpose of a spiritual character transformation
into the perfect image of our Maker.
Look how it is explained in 2 Peter 1:3-11 " According as his divine power hath given unto us
all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called
us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious
promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped
the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And
to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to
godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you,
and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of
our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and
hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give
diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never
fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting
kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ."
3. After Receiving the Promises - Purify Yourself
After we receive the promises of God we still have a part to play to reach the high standard
set forth before us. To enter such an intimate relationship with God as did Enoch we must
experience the continual cleansing power of God in order to grow in Christian character.
2 Cor. 7:1 says, "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse
ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."
The word "perfecting" reveals that the cleansing of the soul is a process. Sanctification is the
work of a lifetime. Men are powerless to purify "themselves" from sin, but there is power in
the word of God. That power is received into the life through the transforming promises of
God. We have a responsibility to fight the "good fight of faith", and put on the whole armor
of God. This means we cannot have a passive or vacillating mind, but one that is firm as a rock
to principle, that will strive to do right because it is right. We have no time in the last
remaining days of this earths history to ignore or lightly esteem God's standard of holiness, nor
be satisfied with a mediocre or halfhearted obedience and only aspire to the form of godliness
without its power.
The Bible says we have to be pure as God is pure in order to see Him. 1 John 3:2-3,
" Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we
know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And
every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure."
As we are cleansing ourselves and being cleansed from moral defilement it will be manifested
in the character by the way we treat those whom Christ has died for. "Seeing ye have
purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the
brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently." 1 Peter 1:22.
The purification of the total man or woman can only be accomplished by constant communion
and submission to the will of God. Like Enoch who walked with God and was translated
without seeing death, we must spend time in constant communion with God, while
ministering to the needs of those we come in contact with.
