Do Not Defer to Show Kindness and Love

"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might;
for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom
in the grave, whither thou goest." Eccles. 9:10

  "Let me not neglect any kindness, for I shall not pass this way again."

  No one knows who originally wrote or said it, though it has been variously attributed to Victory Hugo, to George Eliot, to a Quaker missionary named Stephen Grellet, and to others. No one knows when it was said, why it was said, or how it came to take such firm hold of the world's heart and mind. But take hold it did, impelling untold numbers of people to be kinder and more considerate to their fellow creatures. It remains as fresh and vital as ever, a familiar little gem of inspiration.

"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now.
Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again."

  It is astonishing how this brief quotation, the words of some inspired unknown of a century or more ago, has endured, steadily increasing in influence and popularity. It crops up over and over again in books, magazines, newspapers; has been the subject of innumerable sermons and lectures; is frequently quoted in plays and on radio and television programs. It has proudly hung on the walls of thousands of homes and offices, and has traveled to far places of the world, translated into many different languages.

  "I shall pass through this world but once." It was the favorite quotation of George V of England. He copied it in his own hand and kept it framed on his writing desk.

  "Any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now." Dale Carnegie calls it one of the basic requirements for happiness in life. "Cut out this quotation and put it where you will see it evey morning!" he urges his readers.

  It is a reminder to all of us that we do not live for ourselves alone, that we must do what we can do to help others, to lighten a burden or soften a grief whenever the need arises... "For we shall not pass this way again".

"That best portion of a good man's life-- His little
nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love."
William Wordsworth

"As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men." Gal. 6:10
