To Forgive or Not to Forgive
"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." Ephesians 4:32
"I can forgive, but I can't forget, is only another way of saying,
'I will not forgive.' Forgiveness ought to be like a canceled note torn
in two, and burned up, so that it never can be shown against one."
Jesus is the only man in history to forgive sin. "...Thy sins are forgiven." Luke 7:48. We must forgive to survive! Love covers a multitude of sins. Peter volunteered that he would forgive seven times. Jesus countered, "Seventy times seven." This practice would empty all hospitals. People are bitter, mad, cynical, alienated, and lonely! One can enter heaven with one eye or one arm (Matt. 5). One can also go to hell health in body. Healed bodies may not change lost souls. Some will not receive forgiveness. Their pride will not allow it. Others will not give forgiveness because they have been hurt too much. Forgiveness is basic survival.Fellowship ends where forgiveness stops.
"To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love.
In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness."
God is a forgiving God. Man has to be forgiven to be assured. He must be assured to be secured. he must be secured to evangelize. Joy, heath, and wholeness are the result of forgiveness.
"Forgiveness is not something we only do for other people.
We do it for ourselves to get well and move on."
Upon seeing any sinner a Christian should conclude, "He is a man for whom Christ died." A Christian is not someone with "something to live down" but "something to live with." God's grace is too good to be true! In Luke 15 the prodigal was simply forgiven.
"When a deep injury is done us, we never recover until we forgive."
Forgiveness must be accepted. Peter thought he was "washed up". He not only could not preach, he could not fish either! How could Peter preach on Pentecost? Not because he was so good. He had literally earned the right! He preached because he had accepted and knew what all men need, forgiveness!
"Forgiveness means letting go of the past."
"Without forgiveness, there's no future."
Forgiveness must be given. Forgiveness restores the present, heals the future, and releases the past. Paul told the brethren not to make bad matters worse. (1 Cor. 5). They were to forgive, not censor. Sin cannot be fixed. You cannot unscramble an egg! All you can do with sin is forgive it. Tragically many couples barter. When one has sinned, the other thinks that if he sins too, then they can negotiate! How pitiful. Forgive!
