The Excellency of Contentment
"But godliness with contentment is great gain." 1 Timothy 6:6
Some state that Christianity is an advantageous profession to be in. Althought in the world's eyes, it might be the worst trade, it is the best calling in the world. Those that make a trade of Christianity, merely to serve their own purposes, will be disappointed, and find it a very sorry trade to be in. But those that regard it as their calling, and make a lifework of it, will find it a gainful calling, for it has the promise of the life that now is, as well as of that which is to come.
The Bible says in Psalms 37:16, "For a little which a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked." Godliness is itself great gain, it is profitable to all things, and, wherever there is true godliness, there will be contentment. Those who have arrived at the peak of contentment with their godliness are certainly the easiest and happiest people in this world.
Christian contentment must come from the principles of godliness. He that is godly is sure to be happy in another world, the Kindgom of God. A Christian's gain is godliness with contentment, and this is true gain. A Christian's great gain is not like the little gain of the worldlings, who are so fond of a little worldly advantage. Godliness is ever accompained with contentment in a great or less degree. All true godly people have learned with Paul, "in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content." Phil. 4:11. They are content with what God allots for them, well knowing that this is best for them. Let us all then endeavour after godliness with contentment.
