True Heroism

Let others write of battles fought,
Of bloody, ghastly fields,
Where honor greets the man who wins,
And death the man who yields;
But I will write of him who fights
And vanquishes his sins,
Who struggles on through weary years
Against himself, and wins.

He is a hero staunch and brave
Who fights an unseen foe,
And puts at last beneath his feet
His passions base and low;
Who stands erect in manhood’s might,
Undaunted, undismayed,
The bravest man who ere drew sword
In foray or in raid.

It calls for something more than brawn
Or muscle, to o’recome
An enemy who marcheth not
With banner, plume and drum;
A foe forever lurking nigh,
With silent, stealthy tread;
Forever near your board by day,
At night beside your bed.

All honor, then, to that brave heart!
Though poor or rich he be,
Who struggles with his baser part,
Who conquers and is free.
He may not wear a hero’s crown,
Or fill a hero’s grave,
But truth will place his name among
The bravest of the brave.

A Spartan boy, challenged while he was carrying a fox under his cloak, let the animal tear his vitals out rather than betray the fact that he had it.  The lower impulses --against which every human being must struggle-- are hidden from other people like this small fox. But though unperceived by others, these evil thoughts and desires --if not removed by God’s grace-- will bring certain disaster and destruction. Our daily supplication to our great High Priest should be:  “Catch… the foxes, The little foxes that spoil the vines, For our vines have tender grapes.” Song 2:15 (NKJV)

  Paul in the book of Colossians counsels us to rid ourselves of the claws of the carnal nature. We are instructed to “…put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.” He then urges us to: “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds” Col 3:8-9. Christ is the Heavenly Mortician who alone can bury the body of the “old man”. While we are learning to sustain the walk of faith, we must continually war against the deeds, thoughts and desires of the “old man”. This includes the secret, inner corruptions.

   In David’s famous prayer he systematically prays for deliverance while outlining the steps by which the transgressor marches to utter ruin.

Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. 13) Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Psa. 19:12-13

  We should not be surprised that erroneous ideas as to what constitutes sin and righteousness, ultimately lead to the germination of secret faults. If these are not carefully dug out of the heart, they blossom into visible, presumptuous sins. Persistence in intentional transgression leads to the unpardonable sin of grieving away the Holy Spirit…this is the great transgression.  (See Matt. 12:31,32; Hebrews 6:4-6).

   The Christian must therefore marshal his courage, determination and perseverance in order to war against his or her hidden foxes. We must flee “foolish and hurtful lusts” and “follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.” Progress on this battlefield will require a struggle. We will have to: “Fight the good fight of faith” 1Tim. 6:11-12. May God impart to each of us the moral courage necessary to fight this all-important battle. Those who do, are the true heroes of life.
